Cappoquin House was turned back to front, when the 1779 house was rebuilt after it was burnt in the Troubles in 1923. Both the house and the garden gained from the new orientation which makes the most of the magnificent prospect over the Blackwater River.
Raised beds and lawns sheltered by a beech hedge occupy the ground in front of the house while the less formal part of the garden rambles up the steep hillside with plantings of rhododendrons and azaleas - and an attractive conservatory gives shelter to tender plants, including velvet leafed
tibouchina, oleander and pelargoniums. There is an intriguing ‘mirror’ garden laid out around a sundial, where penstemon, iris and lavender among other old fashioned favourites, are planted to echo each other.
Bamboo lined paths create a sense of mystery and lead to different areas, like the very successful pond surrounded by damp loving plants. Tucked away in different corners are a bog garden, a rose garden with old favourites like ‘William Lobb’ and Rosa banksia, and a spring garden.
The house, home to the Keane family for 200 years, has a fascinating history (it was once occupied by the Seventh Bicycle Brigade), and is open to the public.
