The replanting of the old orchard at Coolaught provided the perfect excuse for Caroline Deacon – a passionate gardener like her husband Harry - to expand the garden beside the family’s farmhouse, one of the 100 oldest homes in County Wexford.
After the Deacons came second in the Wexford section of the National Gardens competition in 2000 their garden began to attract attention. Flower clubs came to visit, and the Deacons decided to open their cottage style garden, full of nooks and garden rooms tucked into an interlocking layout, the design is packed with ideas and unusual plants collected by the Deacons from as far away as America.
The Egyptian garden was inspired by a silver wedding trip, the gravel path around an obelisk is intended to symbolise the serpentine course of the Nile with plantings herbs appropriate to each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac.
There’s a pretty composition featuring blue garden furniture and the pleasing yellow of Anthemis tinctoria ‘E.C. Buxton’ and a show stopping statuesque Thalictrum ‘Elim’nearby, a laburnum walk ,gravel garden and a new woodland area. The traditional front garden is carpeted with purple crocuses and double daffodils in Spring.
A nursery, featuring many of the Deacons’ plants grew up as a natural extension to the garden and in a happy continuation of the story the Deacons have been joined in the enterprise by their son Clifford a horticulture graduate.
