Already a popular destination in its previous location above Conways pub, the Sayana family's restaurant, Ruchii, entered an exciting new phase in 2023 when it relocated to spacious two-storey premises nearby.
The warmly pleasing surroundings set the tone for an enjoyable experience from the outset and it's worth having a look at their website before a first visit, as the aims of the team are well laid out and all of the menus are available online to familiarise yourself with when there's no pressure to order. And, as this is a restaurant that aims to be a cut above 'good' and to offer diners a special experience that encompasses a wide range of Indian regional specialities - including the option of a six-course Tasting Menu with matching wines - doing a bit of research beforehand will be time well spent.
The traditionally trained Chef-patron, Sateesh Sayana, worked in some impressive kitchens in India and here in Ireland (including six years at the wonderful Rasam), before opening the original Ruchii in 2018. Here, he proudly credits the team who worked with him to create the 'true' Indian menu that is now offered and outlines the contribution of each individual, which feels really special. Everything revolves around Ayurveda, the six primary tastes of Indian cooking - Sweet, Sour, Salt, Bitter, Pungent and Astringent. This is summed up in their simple logo - a wheel with six spokes - and it forms the basis of their understandably popular Tasting Menu, which is also available as a Vegetarian Tasting Menu. For both of these special menus, each course is accompanied by wines skilfully paired by Tom Doorley - who also curated the main drinks list which is carefully selected to complement spicy foods and, unusually, includes a pair of Indian wines.
But you don't have to commit to a Tasting Menu when dining at Ruchii. The à la carte offers a wide ranging collection of about eleven appetisers and main courses, plus side dishes, rice, naans, and desserts from the regions of India and, while some are familiar - chicken tikka and lamb seekh kebab, perhaps - most will be new to the average diner, creating a sense of adventure. Local suppliers including Kish Fish, Keelings and Irish Country Meats are credited and the cooking is excellent, skilfully balancing rich spicy flavours and creamy textures with contrasting elements. Specialities to try on a first visit include an intriguing starter of Pulled jackfruit phulka ('an Indian take on a vegetarian taco') and a hearty main of Adraki lamb chops (Wicklow lamb marinated with ginger, cumin, fennel served with mint chutney), which - like everything served here - are presented with style. A short Sunday lunch menu is also offered (in addition to the à la carte) and a very nice little Kids Menu, all served with warmth and genuine hospitality.
A place for all lovers of Indian food - and also a fascinating introduction for others - Ruchii is doing something different and it's sure to make you want to return.
