Coole Park
Georgina Campbell
Coole Park, now a nature reserve of 405 hectares (1,000 acres), was once the home of Lady Gregory, dramatist, folklorist and co-founder of the Abbey Theatre with William Butler Yeats and Edward Martyn.
In the early 20th century Coole Park was the centre of the Irish Literary Revival. Yeats, Shaw, Synge, and O'Casey among others all came to experience its magic; their initials are carved on the Autograph Tree. The Seven Woods celebrated by Yeats are part of a nature trail taking in woods, river, turlough, bare limestone and Coole lake.
The Visitor Centre contains an audio/visual presentation, "Lady Gregory of Coole", a literary history of Coole Park, and also a multi-media exhibition, "Coole Park through the eyes of 'Me and Nu', Granddaughters of Lady Gregory".
