Dublin Castle

Up until 1922 Dublin Castle was the seat of British rule in Ireland. Originally built in the 13th century on a site previously settled by the Viking most of it dates from the 18th century, though a castle has stood on the site since the days of King John, the first Lord of Ireland.

Dublin Castle has functioned as a military fortress, a prison, treasury, courts of law and the seat of English Administration in Ireland for 700 years and is now used for important State receptions and Presidential Inaugurations.

The State Apartments, Undercroft, Chapel Royal, Craft Shop, Heritage Centre and Restaurant are open to visitors.

Opening Time:

Open Monday-Saturday 10am-4.45pm; Sun & Bank Hols 12-4.45pm. Dublin Castle & the State Apartments can be closed at short notice for Government Business. Closed 24 - 28 and 31 December, 1 January and Good Friday.

Admission Charge:

Adults €4.50; Child (under 12) €2; OAP/Student €3.50.
